2025 US Open - The Beast Vs. the Field!

Jesse Stakes Season 3 Episode 109

It's the week of the 2025 US Open and the boys from the Tin Cup Club join the show to talk about Oakmont Country Club and the event being held there this week!

The U.S. Open is one of golf’s four major championships, organized by the United States Golf Association (USGA). It was first played on October 4, 1895, at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island, featuring just 11 competitors. The tournament has since grown into one of the most prestigious events in golf.

Oakmont Country Club, located in Pennsylvania, is one of the most historic and challenging golf courses in the United States. It has hosted the U.S. Open a record 10 times, making it the most frequent venue for the championship2.

Oakmont’s Legacy in the U.S. Open

  • First U.S. Open (1927): Won by Tommy Armour, defeating Harry Cooper in a playoff.
  • Jack Nicklaus vs. Arnold Palmer (1962): Nicklaus won his first major by defeating Palmer in a playoff.
  • Johnny Miller’s Historic Round (1973): Miller shot a final-round 63, one of the greatest rounds in major history.
  • Dustin Johnson’s Victory (2016): Johnson won despite a controversial penalty ruling.

Course Characteristics

  • Church Pew Bunkers: Famous hazards that make Oakmont one of the toughest courses.
  • Lightning-Fast Greens: Often considered the fastest in championship golf.
  • Brutal Rough & Narrow Fairways: Designed to test even the best players.

The 2025 U.S. Open is currently being held at Oakmont, and experts predict it will be one of the most difficult tournaments in recent years

1
00:00:02.820 --> 00:00:14.620
Jesse Stakes: Hey, everybody! Welcome to making sense of it all as part of the continuing series that we've done with the major championships this year. I've got the 10 Cup Club on with me, Michael Shelton. Thank you so much for joining me.

2
00:00:14.620 --> 00:00:16.730
Michael Shelton: As always. Jesse. Thanks for having me.

3
00:00:16.730 --> 00:00:18.929
Jesse Stakes: And, Wes, it's always a pleasure, my friend.

4
00:00:19.220 --> 00:00:26.089
Wes Altice Golf: Right back at you, man. Thanks for having me on. I can't wait to talk a little. Us open at Oakmont. Absolutely go.

5
00:00:26.090 --> 00:00:40.649
Jesse Stakes: So let's talk about the event itself. First, st Shelton, you know. What do you like? What is the? You know the Us. Opens our National Championship. It's you know, it is the, you know, if you've got the American flag on one event during the year, this is it? What what does it mean to you?

6
00:00:40.990 --> 00:00:50.200
Michael Shelton: As you can see. I have my us open head on right now. It means a lot with those red, white, and blue colors. I try to tie that into 10 cup, and it has not worked out very well so far.

7
00:00:50.590 --> 00:00:56.479
Michael Shelton: But but it is our National championship. What I think about when I think of this tournament is just

8
00:00:56.600 --> 00:01:20.680
Michael Shelton: absolutely difficult playing conditions. You know, you see, these guys tear up courses around the us, no matter how long they build them, but just the way they they design the setup for these courses, I mean it. It sometimes almost makes it difficult to watch. I think for most of us that are not West's handicap. It is kind of nice to see some of these guys struggle sometimes. Sometimes I think the Us. Open does it. They

9
00:01:20.680 --> 00:01:27.870
Michael Shelton: they overdo it a little bit. But at the same point in time. It's nice to have that kind of mix up from your week to week. PGA tour event.

10
00:01:28.040 --> 00:01:35.119
Jesse Stakes: Yeah, absolutely. Hey? Before I go any further, guys, it is my fault. But what you drinking this week, Wes.

11
00:01:35.740 --> 00:01:40.059
Wes Altice Golf: I've actually got some Jefferson's reserve a very small batch.

12
00:01:40.240 --> 00:01:41.769
Wes Altice Golf: That's what it says on the bottle. So.

13
00:01:41.770 --> 00:01:43.640
Jesse Stakes: Very small batch.

14
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:53.030
Wes Altice Golf: Small batch. But it is very, very good. I highly recommend it got on sale at the local liquor store that happens to be closing down so

15
00:01:53.140 --> 00:01:55.669
Wes Altice Golf: snagged me a bottle, and I'm enjoying it.

16
00:01:55.670 --> 00:01:57.559
Jesse Stakes: Nice Shelton, what do you got in your hand?

17
00:01:57.560 --> 00:02:10.460
Michael Shelton: I had a gift from someone for doing some letters for them. At some point I have Elijah Craig toasted barrel, and it was just opened a second ago, and I will say it is a pretty delicious.

18
00:02:10.690 --> 00:02:17.179
Jesse Stakes: I. I went like super old school today. So I figured us open. You can talk about

19
00:02:17.380 --> 00:02:21.890
Jesse Stakes: like kind of his history for me. Just plain old Jim Beam.

20
00:02:22.350 --> 00:02:23.590
Wes Altice Golf: Oh, hell! Up, boy!

21
00:02:23.900 --> 00:02:24.270
Jesse Stakes: A guy.

22
00:02:24.270 --> 00:02:28.400
Wes Altice Golf: Love it, love! It cheers, gentlemen, cheers, cheers.

23
00:02:31.530 --> 00:02:35.210
Jesse Stakes: All right. So same question, Wes, what does the Us open mean to you?

24
00:02:35.560 --> 00:02:37.140
Wes Altice Golf: Carnage, absolutely.

25
00:02:37.276 --> 00:02:37.550
Jesse Stakes: Of course.

26
00:02:37.550 --> 00:02:39.240
Wes Altice Golf: Carnage fair enough.

27
00:02:39.465 --> 00:02:39.690
Jesse Stakes: Bye.

28
00:02:39.690 --> 00:02:50.733
Wes Altice Golf: I mean, I I agree with Shelton, you know, it's good to see the guys struggle, but I don't like. When a certain organization loses the golf course. Usga.

29
00:02:51.480 --> 00:02:57.550
Wes Altice Golf: you know, some of these older school courses. They weren't really designed to have the green speeds as fast as they are

30
00:02:58.310 --> 00:03:07.310
Wes Altice Golf: and they tend to, they tend to lose them. So hopefully, I not gonna lie. I've been doing a lot of just deep dives on

31
00:03:07.610 --> 00:03:12.460
Wes Altice Golf: Oakmont just seeing the history of it, and stuff like that. And, man, I I just hope they

32
00:03:12.690 --> 00:03:18.660
Wes Altice Golf: they don't lose this one, because this could be a really really fun us open

33
00:03:18.830 --> 00:03:21.559
Wes Altice Golf: very low under par, if they just.

34
00:03:22.280 --> 00:03:28.069
Wes Altice Golf: you know or say, stay around par. Sorry, one or 2, 3 under, maybe, but

35
00:03:28.390 --> 00:03:37.030
Wes Altice Golf: I think it'll be a fair test. And just how those greens are designed. So hopefully, Usj lets the core shine and play like how it's supposed to.

36
00:03:37.650 --> 00:04:02.370
Jesse Stakes: Yeah, no, I agree with you for me, too. One of the biggest things that I always think about is the Us. Open is, it's just that it's open, and it's if you're good enough. If you want to go through qualifying, you can play in the tournament like any of us like any of us that said, Hey, you know what I'm you know. I believe that I'm good enough. You got a shot doesn't mean you'll make it. But it. But you got to swing at it like they'll allow you to step in the box and actually try to qualify.

37
00:04:02.370 --> 00:04:07.959
Jesse Stakes: And that's like to me like. That's 1 of the coolest parts about it to me is that it's. Is that truly like

38
00:04:08.990 --> 00:04:21.959
Jesse Stakes: more so than any other sport for me, like with golf with that part of it, because if I wanted to go out and say, Hey, I think I can. You know I think I can go hit a 95 mile an hour fastball. Today I want to go. See if I can qualify, quote unquote, to be in the major leagues, or you know, whatever it is.

39
00:04:22.330 --> 00:04:29.579
Jesse Stakes: you don't have control over that, but you really do have control over it like you play your best, and if you're good enough

40
00:04:30.010 --> 00:04:34.459
Jesse Stakes: you can go play in the Us. Open. That that, to me is one of the most special things about the event.

41
00:04:34.880 --> 00:04:35.849
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah, for sure.

42
00:04:37.860 --> 00:04:38.800
Jesse Stakes: So.

43
00:04:39.350 --> 00:04:46.740
Jesse Stakes: Shelton, I'll ask you this. I don't know if you noticed this. Did you? Did you see where Phil Mickelson was quoted this week, as saying this might be his last. Us open.

44
00:04:47.340 --> 00:04:49.348
Michael Shelton: I did see that.

45
00:04:50.380 --> 00:04:58.680
Michael Shelton: I don't know if I fully agree with that, but Phil is still, and there are certain things he says he will go do so. I

46
00:04:58.790 --> 00:05:09.410
Michael Shelton: if he does, it's it's been a wonderful career. He's been one of the most fun golfers to watch in in history. If it is, I hope he plays well and wish him the best.

47
00:05:10.230 --> 00:05:21.219
Jesse Stakes: Yeah, I think he played. I think he played pretty well in this week's live event so far. But I know Phil holds a special place in your heart, Wes. So what did you did you hear? Did you hear that? And what did you think.

48
00:05:21.220 --> 00:05:23.161
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah, I heard that, and

49
00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:31.220
Wes Altice Golf: with like a true Phil Fan, and we'll we'll wait and see. We know Phil likes to talk and

50
00:05:31.580 --> 00:05:39.579
Wes Altice Golf: do all that fun stuff. So I'll wait until I actually see a formal retirement, and then 4 or 5 years goes by and he doesn't play in one, but.

51
00:05:39.580 --> 00:05:40.200
Jesse Stakes: Yeah.

52
00:05:40.200 --> 00:05:48.173
Wes Altice Golf: I mean. I I think it's impressive for what he's done at his age. You know. We went in at Kiowa a major at his age.

53
00:05:48.800 --> 00:06:01.460
Wes Altice Golf: you know he gets hot. You you just don't know what the guy will do. He's an incredible talent. I have a feeling. If he, if he finishes in the top 10 this week there is no way. This is his last. Us

54
00:06:01.460 --> 00:06:05.770
Wes Altice Golf: integrate a row. He may not play at wing foot. But

55
00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:10.960
Wes Altice Golf: he, this won't be the last if he plays well, I think, even if he makes the cut and

56
00:06:11.320 --> 00:06:15.709
Wes Altice Golf: plays well on the weekend and shows some flashes of his old self.

57
00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:24.879
Wes Altice Golf: I I don't see him hanging it up now. If he shoots 90 90 back to back then. Yeah, he might be done. But I I just don't see that until.

58
00:06:25.020 --> 00:06:50.620
Jesse Stakes: Yeah, no, I was. I was kind of surprised when I heard it. It was it made me think about, though I mean as far as how many second place finishes he's had in the Us. Opens over the years. And then also, like one of the one of the 1st memories or one of the things that that I have in my head, as far as when I really really started to enjoy the game of golf was the 2,006 us open and it when he bounced it off the tent and ended up screw, you know, screwing up the last hole, or I mean.

59
00:06:50.620 --> 00:06:51.290
Wes Altice Golf: Yes.

60
00:06:51.290 --> 00:06:58.620
Jesse Stakes: I mean, we wouldn't be talking. We wouldn't be having this conversation. It would have been 19 years ago. He'd have won a Us. Open, but it's it's

61
00:06:58.620 --> 00:07:25.729
Jesse Stakes: that was one of the 1st things that I ever really paid a whole lot of attention to. I couldn't believe it that he was, I mean. I can remember it because I was with my now wife's family. We were in South. We're in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and I'm sitting in a bedroom just watching the end of the Us. Open, like everyone else, is like, Why, what are you doing? And it's like, and I'm watching Phil give it away on the last hole, and it was just like so when I heard him say, Hey, this might be my last one, and to thank somebody who I've you know.

62
00:07:25.850 --> 00:07:29.670
Jesse Stakes: somebody who we've watched for years now for 30 plus years

63
00:07:29.840 --> 00:07:56.660
Jesse Stakes: is now, you know, saying, Hey, I don't know that I'm good enough anymore to compete in this. I don't know if I you know, I think it's passed me by, and that was just like a really, you know, that was surprising to me. The other thing. And this kind of goes into what I wanted to talk about next was to say that you're not going to play in another us open when you're talking about on a monster course like Oakmont. And you're going to judge like, Hey, whether this is a pass or fail, based on Oakmont. Like to me.

64
00:07:56.660 --> 00:08:04.609
Jesse Stakes: I think last time he played in it, I think, is when he hurt his wrist, and he couldn't even, I think he I think he couldn't even get out of the 1st 2 rounds because he got injured.

65
00:08:04.890 --> 00:08:06.590
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah. Great point.

66
00:08:06.590 --> 00:08:09.960
Jesse Stakes: Yeah. So I mean, so Oakmont, as a Corso.

67
00:08:10.280 --> 00:08:24.930
Jesse Stakes: it's got a huge amount of respect from from the whole country. Anyone who's a golfer like I mean, as far as like when they talk about it, it's got a lot of respect, course was built in 19 0 3, and it seemed to hold up pretty good over the last 122 years. What do you guys think.

68
00:08:25.080 --> 00:08:25.670
Jesse Stakes: Sheldon.

69
00:08:25.670 --> 00:08:26.290
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah.

70
00:08:26.740 --> 00:08:50.829
Michael Shelton: I agree. I think it's gonna be a great test. I mean, it's different, like, I just mentioned earlier, you know, lengthening courses. We've done all these things to try to contain these players. But really, I think when you're watching what really gets them narrow fairways, long, rough, and then you bring in the weather. And you know I don't know what the weather is going to be like this week. But you know, just look at that fairway right there behind Wes. I mean, it looks like it's about 4 yards wide

71
00:08:51.656 --> 00:09:03.493
Michael Shelton: I don't know if you want to be in the church queues on the left or the Bunkers on the right, but I can promise you it's probably neither one of those so so I think it'll hold up. It'll hold up and give these players a good test.

72
00:09:03.990 --> 00:09:05.899
Michael Shelton: So, looking forward to it.

73
00:09:06.650 --> 00:09:11.529
Jesse Stakes: Wes. I know you said you've you've looked at it a lot this week. So what are your thoughts on Oakmont?

74
00:09:12.071 --> 00:09:13.877
Wes Altice Golf: I wanna play there so bad

75
00:09:15.140 --> 00:09:21.029
Wes Altice Golf: like it. It's just so cool. I think the one thing that doesn't get a lot of attention

76
00:09:21.190 --> 00:09:24.209
Wes Altice Golf: is the green designs. There are some greens out there that

77
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:30.150
Wes Altice Golf: you got fingers kind of running in and out of them. You've got some tricky PIN positions that they can throw out there. So

78
00:09:30.675 --> 00:09:38.010
Wes Altice Golf: and it just looks so cool. It's like this out in the middle of, you know, Pennsylvania in this open field. It looks like.

79
00:09:38.010 --> 00:09:38.720
Jesse Stakes: Foreign country.

80
00:09:39.010 --> 00:09:55.740
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah. And and the undulations. I don't think people appreciate. There's some pretty good ones. The front 9 looks like the brutal 9. So far. Number one is not an easy opening hole going into 2 and 3. Then you gotta deal with the church pews. I mean.

81
00:09:56.390 --> 00:10:01.449
Wes Altice Golf: it looks like you from the moment that ball goes in the air it's hang on, and

82
00:10:01.630 --> 00:10:06.560
Wes Altice Golf: you know a bogey is not necessarily a bad thing, but doubles in a Us. Open.

83
00:10:06.740 --> 00:10:13.480
Wes Altice Golf: It's kind of checkmate after that, because you're not going to make it up with a ton of birdies. And this course is not going to give you a ton of birdies.

84
00:10:14.310 --> 00:10:25.720
Jesse Stakes: So one of the coolest things. I thought it was really interesting. The guy who built Oakmonter designed it, the original designer. It's the only course he ever did. Henry Clay Fonz, I believe, is his name.

85
00:10:26.230 --> 00:10:37.260
Jesse Stakes: It's the only golf course the guy designed, and it ends up being one of the highest, most highly regarded golf courses in, you know in the history of the game within the United States, how crazy is that.

86
00:10:37.880 --> 00:10:38.866
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah, it's

87
00:10:39.480 --> 00:10:47.499
Wes Altice Golf: You wonder what made them stop? I didn't go down that rabbit hole. But, man, if if this is what an amateur did. One time

88
00:10:48.530 --> 00:10:54.950
Wes Altice Golf: I I would have loved to see what else he could have came up with. You know the land that he had with Oakmont, where else he could

89
00:10:55.480 --> 00:10:58.209
Wes Altice Golf: throw some stuff up there. It's it's very impressive.

90
00:10:58.210 --> 00:11:06.880
Jesse Stakes: I'm guessing in in 19 0. 3. Probably somebody looked at him and said, Hey, dumbass! Plant corn on that land. Stop designing golf courses.

91
00:11:06.880 --> 00:11:11.030
Michael Shelton: I'm gonna go on a different route. I'm gonna say he knew what he had, and this was just a mic drop moment.

92
00:11:11.030 --> 00:11:11.469
Jesse Stakes: Is that coming.

93
00:11:11.470 --> 00:11:14.169
Michael Shelton: Doing one and done, and I'm I'm off.

94
00:11:16.260 --> 00:11:16.939
Jesse Stakes: I mean one of the.

95
00:11:16.940 --> 00:11:21.200
Wes Altice Golf: Smart man. Yeah, I need one of those moments in my life.

96
00:11:21.200 --> 00:11:22.479
Jesse Stakes: Maybe this is it.

97
00:11:22.480 --> 00:11:27.539
Jesse Stakes: Michelangelo paint, paint the Sistine Chapel 1st time grabbing a paintbrush, and he's like I'm done.

98
00:11:27.540 --> 00:11:28.710
Wes Altice Golf: Come out! Come out, boys!

99
00:11:30.860 --> 00:11:44.139
Jesse Stakes: So did either of you get to see Dechambeau's preview video like where he went around the whole. He played around on the whole course, while they're putting up the stands and everything. I thought that was super cool. Did you see it, Shelton?

100
00:11:44.140 --> 00:11:45.660
Michael Shelton: I did not get to see that.

101
00:11:45.660 --> 00:11:50.430
Jesse Stakes: So I thought it was really interesting, because you were actually seeing one of the top players in the world

102
00:11:50.690 --> 00:12:03.569
Jesse Stakes: like, actually kind of go through, go through his practice round and kind of it really kind of, I mean. He talked through his shots, talked through it, talked to his thought, talked through his thought process

103
00:12:03.570 --> 00:12:27.889
Jesse Stakes: as he was gone. The putting greens and granted the greens were much slower, I think, than what they're going to be for play, but it was really pretty cool. It was unique. I've never. I don't think I've ever seen anybody actually walk through their practice round and like at a major championship venue, and I was kind of amazed, really, that the Usga. And that Oakmont allowed them to film so much there. I thought that was really cool on their part. But, Wes, it seems like you watched it. What do you think.

104
00:12:28.260 --> 00:12:29.363
Wes Altice Golf: I watched it twice.

105
00:12:29.640 --> 00:12:30.280
Jesse Stakes: I thought.

106
00:12:30.280 --> 00:12:33.826
Wes Altice Golf: I, seriously, I thought it was absolutely fantastic.

107
00:12:34.940 --> 00:12:41.164
Wes Altice Golf: kudos to Bryson kudos to the Usga, allowing, I think, they had a bunch of creators out.

108
00:12:41.840 --> 00:12:47.040
Wes Altice Golf: that week. So they did. There's a you know, the foreplay guys

109
00:12:47.210 --> 00:12:54.330
Wes Altice Golf: no laying up all those guys. They all went out there and shot content. I think you're gonna see something from Grant come up Monday or Tuesday.

110
00:12:55.044 --> 00:12:58.590
Wes Altice Golf: so, but you know, awesome to Bryce and to

111
00:12:59.050 --> 00:13:05.670
Wes Altice Golf: to do that. He had his caddy with them. They had an Oakmont caddy, and and they just walked through that course, and

112
00:13:05.840 --> 00:13:14.239
Wes Altice Golf: it was showing its teeth. And it's not even us open. So I I think it's gonna be fun. And I think that's about probably how the members play the course.

113
00:13:14.660 --> 00:13:25.499
Wes Altice Golf: And even it was given. Bryson fits. So it's really cool. I think he I actually thought he played a phenomenal round of golf when he's like one or 2 under or something like that.

114
00:13:25.500 --> 00:13:26.460
Jesse Stakes: Even he was dead.

115
00:13:26.460 --> 00:13:36.159
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah. So I mean, just show you there is a practice around a little bit of wind, and it wasn't even fiery conditions. And it. He went out and shot even.

116
00:13:36.320 --> 00:13:37.090
Jesse Stakes: Right.

117
00:13:37.930 --> 00:14:02.600
Michael Shelton: I know you all mentioned this before, but when it came to Youtube golf and Bryson, you have to give this guy credit for what he's done with that and I think this is just another example. I mean, he's opening up golf to a whole group, another group of people, and let you see it from a different lens than just what we see on TV. And I like, I said, it's it's amazing what he has done with that, and I think he was kind of disliked there for a while. I think a lot of people

118
00:14:02.600 --> 00:14:13.930
Michael Shelton: people kind of misunderstood him when he went to live, and some of the analytics and the bodybuilding. But, my gosh, that guy has done an amazing job connecting with the Fans, and I mean other members of the of the tour. Both Tours.

119
00:14:14.230 --> 00:14:14.910
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah.

120
00:14:14.910 --> 00:14:17.909
Jesse Stakes: Yeah, no, I think so, too. I mean a hundred percent. I mean, there's

121
00:14:18.100 --> 00:14:26.549
Jesse Stakes: he really took ownership over his own image. He took ownership over what did he want his content to look like and be, I mean, and it's to your point

122
00:14:27.010 --> 00:14:55.799
Jesse Stakes: there's not another. There's not another player that is of his caliber, I mean. Yes, we have other Youtube golfers. There are even some of them like the Bryan brothers, or I know Wesley Brian. At least, I think he qualified for the Us. Open, but for somebody who is truly a top 10 golfer, probably arguably a top 5 golfer in the world, a guy who won a major last year a guy who's contended in, you know, almost every major, aside from the Open Championship last year for the last 2 years

123
00:14:56.270 --> 00:15:13.319
Jesse Stakes: for him to spend the time that he does on creating content, and then to be able to get into a competitive mindset and actually turn it on. That's amazing to me that he can shift between the 2. Even in the same event. You can see him kind of put that entertainer hat on, and that's I think it's so impressive.

124
00:15:13.590 --> 00:15:15.166
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah. And I think,

125
00:15:15.880 --> 00:15:20.410
Wes Altice Golf: I heard the foreplay guys talk about. So they made a really great point like.

126
00:15:21.370 --> 00:15:26.180
Wes Altice Golf: how little competition the live guys are getting. But you're seeing Bryson

127
00:15:26.340 --> 00:15:40.709
Wes Altice Golf: up there in most of the majors, you know, contending. And they made a great point of like he's going out to these, you know, rag tag golf courses wanting course records. And he's getting one shot at it. And it's on camera.

128
00:15:40.910 --> 00:15:47.690
Wes Altice Golf: He's actually playing with some pressure in these videos that he's doing the break, you know, fifties and all like. So

129
00:15:48.140 --> 00:15:50.170
Wes Altice Golf: he's actually, I think, getting more

130
00:15:50.780 --> 00:15:56.159
Wes Altice Golf: tournament time by doing those videos and have some pressure than the rest of the live guys cause.

131
00:15:56.610 --> 00:16:03.199
Wes Altice Golf: you know, we saw the PGA championship ROM faded out in the end, and you know golf is 72 holes, man, and

132
00:16:03.730 --> 00:16:07.580
Wes Altice Golf: I think that has something to do with it. I just don't think they get the quality reps that

133
00:16:08.020 --> 00:16:11.020
Wes Altice Golf: the Pj tour guys do, week in, week out.

134
00:16:11.510 --> 00:16:22.279
Wes Altice Golf: and Bryson doing this thing on his own and setting like goals. He's simulating pressure where most people aren't. Now. Granted, they're probably out playing their money games at Whisper Rock and all that, but

135
00:16:22.600 --> 00:16:28.129
Wes Altice Golf: it's just unless they're playing for 200 million dollars out of their bank account. It's not the same pressure.

136
00:16:28.940 --> 00:16:30.380
Jesse Stakes: I think it's a great point.

137
00:16:31.074 --> 00:16:33.249
Jesse Stakes: So along those lines.

138
00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:47.730
Jesse Stakes: you know, we talk about Bryson. But just for the whole field, do you think that there is a type of player that benefits this week like on at Oakmont over another? Or do you think that it's that it's a that? It's a fair test for all involved.

139
00:16:48.530 --> 00:16:49.400
Jesse Stakes: Shelton.

140
00:16:50.410 --> 00:17:15.070
Michael Shelton: I'm I'm as I'm looking at my picks. I'm going through that exact battle right now. You know, you think about all more recent PGA events. It's bomb and gouge right. Hit it as far as you can. If you're in the rough, gives you a shorter wedge, maybe have an advantage. But just the bunker designs the layout and the grass. I think it's gonna be very difficult. So then you start going. Who's who can put it in the fairway.

141
00:17:15.069 --> 00:17:23.479
Michael Shelton: and then just ball, strike in the building. Get it close I don't know who this course is set up, for. I'm looking forward to see.

142
00:17:23.940 --> 00:17:24.599
Jesse Stakes: Yeah.

143
00:17:25.089 --> 00:17:25.880
Jesse Stakes: Yes.

144
00:17:26.313 --> 00:17:33.469
Wes Altice Golf: I'm I'm right there with you, Shelton. I'm I'm juggling with, you know. It's

145
00:17:34.350 --> 00:17:43.785
Wes Altice Golf: you gotta have some power out there. One really depends on how fast the fairways are gonna get. But it's I think it's gonna come down to more driving accuracy and approach

146
00:17:44.400 --> 00:17:51.399
Wes Altice Golf: you know, a guy that pumps it out there carries it 2, 80 rolls out. The 2 9,300, I think, is, gonna be

147
00:17:51.660 --> 00:17:56.690
Wes Altice Golf: pretty valuable. I know. Dj, one here in 16, and you know he's your

148
00:17:57.110 --> 00:18:05.960
Wes Altice Golf: dude was incredible back then, and I mean, in that same year you had Shane Lowry tied for second. So

149
00:18:06.180 --> 00:18:13.446
Wes Altice Golf: it's kind of like he's not a bomber, but he's a great iron player. He's short game. I also think.

150
00:18:14.170 --> 00:18:17.139
Wes Altice Golf: who's got a strong mental game coming into this thing, and

151
00:18:17.320 --> 00:18:26.070
Wes Altice Golf: not being discouraged with, you know, 2 bogeys in a row so I I think it's going to be a blend of driving accuracy, but you have to be

152
00:18:26.430 --> 00:18:30.650
Wes Altice Golf: slightly longer than average to to compete out there.

153
00:18:31.500 --> 00:18:35.882
Jesse Stakes: No, I think that's I think all of those are fair points. I think that it's it's

154
00:18:38.280 --> 00:19:03.709
Jesse Stakes: It was interesting, even watching Bryson do that little practice round thing because he was there were several times where they would talk about him and his cat. He'd be like 3 wood or driver, and he kept going. He was like Driver, because I got to get it down as far as I possibly can, so that I can have a shorter club, and even if, even if he was in the rough, he wanted to have a wedge in his hand, or or something with more loft rather than laying back, and then, if he makes a mistake, then you've got a flat faced club trying to get out of that rough.

155
00:19:03.770 --> 00:19:18.179
Jesse Stakes: And so I do. I mean to me. I feel like length always provides an advantage. I don't care what anybody says. If you, if you can hit the ball further you get means you got something with more loft and shorter shaft, or you know, unless it's the same length shaft that Bryson's using.

156
00:19:20.420 --> 00:19:44.679
Jesse Stakes: But you've got more control over your ball, I think, even if you're even if you're coming out of the rough, even though the rough looks absolutely ridiculous. What what they show. So so no, I think that that's but if somebody comes out there and hits 8, you know, hits 14 fairways and hits, you know, 90% of the greens, and they can putt. Then it doesn't really matter if they're a little shorter than the rest of the field, either. So

157
00:19:45.010 --> 00:20:01.000
Jesse Stakes: I guess after that we can kind of go to picks, I mean, who do you like? I think we've got? We've got several absentee people here that we gotta that we have to make up for. So our usual person that would handle this decided not to show up today. So when he listens to this.

158
00:20:01.420 --> 00:20:05.960
Jesse Stakes: thank you very much, Mike Padron, because this is not my specialty.

159
00:20:06.300 --> 00:20:10.730
Michael Shelton: Wasn't this his choice of date, too? Wasn't he the 1st one who said, Hey, let's do. June 6.th

160
00:20:10.730 --> 00:20:18.190
Jesse Stakes: 100%. This was Mike Padron's choice of date, and he cancels on us hours before. So thank you very much for that.

161
00:20:19.290 --> 00:20:19.970
Jesse Stakes: Hmm!

162
00:20:20.300 --> 00:20:20.959
Jesse Stakes: We won't.

163
00:20:20.960 --> 00:20:28.770
Jesse Stakes: We will tag his Twitter handle and his and his Instagram handle at the bottom of this. So if anybody wants to say anything choice to him, be my guest.

164
00:20:28.770 --> 00:20:32.261
Wes Altice Golf: Do it, I encourage, I encourage it.

165
00:20:32.760 --> 00:20:37.489
Jesse Stakes: All right. So, for, like the 1st person that we have picking is Chris Blakely

166
00:20:37.650 --> 00:20:39.740
Jesse Stakes: Shelton, you have Blakely's 1st pick.

167
00:20:40.250 --> 00:20:48.380
Michael Shelton: I do. He wants the person we discussed. Probably most of this episode, not named Bill Mickelson, Bryson Dechambeau.

168
00:20:51.860 --> 00:21:01.859
Jesse Stakes: All right, taking some notes here, so I can send them on to our person. That is mia today.

169
00:21:01.960 --> 00:21:11.539
Jesse Stakes: All right. Speaking of that person. He has his net, he has the next pick. I could really do him dirty here, and just totally shaft him with his picture. But I'm not gonna do that

170
00:21:14.780 --> 00:21:29.149
Jesse Stakes: all right. So his 1st pick. He's gonna pick Scotty Scheffler so that you can't argue with that one. I mean, that's it is crazy that we haven't even mentioned his name like as far as talking about this, just because the guy has been ridiculous. I think he's won his last 3 events that he entered right.

171
00:21:29.570 --> 00:21:40.210
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah. And and I mean he's doing. I think it's coming down to like who you're gonna take. You're gonna take Scotty or the field. If he's that sometimes he's getting very tiger. Ask. So

172
00:21:40.490 --> 00:21:45.949
Wes Altice Golf: I mean, I think we all know. And anyone who listens to this Scotty is going to be the favorite, so

173
00:21:46.650 --> 00:21:51.510
Wes Altice Golf: there's not. There's not much to say. He's incredible, and let them go.

174
00:21:51.690 --> 00:21:55.020
Jesse Stakes: No doubt, Sheldon, you're next. What do you? Who do you got for your 1st pick.

175
00:21:55.370 --> 00:22:03.090
Michael Shelton: I think we did mention Scheffler we talked about. We want a guy who hits it long and straight, and a good short meeting. Get out of the rough. We just didn't say his name.

176
00:22:03.420 --> 00:22:06.450
Michael Shelton: but we all knew who we were talking about. That was Scotty.

177
00:22:06.450 --> 00:22:07.043
Wes Altice Golf: Fair enough.

178
00:22:07.340 --> 00:22:07.690
Jesse Stakes: Hmm.

179
00:22:08.200 --> 00:22:08.920
Michael Shelton: -Oh!

180
00:22:09.300 --> 00:22:20.430
Michael Shelton: This was supposed to be his year of majors. He obviously had one, not as much the last time, but I think with him on the board. I'm gonna have to go, Rory Mcilroy.

181
00:22:23.320 --> 00:22:30.450
Jesse Stakes: Alright, and then next we have Mr. Altus.

182
00:22:33.230 --> 00:22:39.069
Wes Altice Golf: I don't love this, but there's something in my gut that's screaming this. I'm going Xander.

183
00:22:52.890 --> 00:22:53.590
Jesse Stakes: All right.

184
00:22:54.190 --> 00:22:56.180
Jesse Stakes: So my turn

185
00:22:56.320 --> 00:23:23.890
Jesse Stakes: and I know it's funny you said that about Jon Rahm. But Jon Rahm is going to be my pick. I feel like I think, that he kind of did have a rough start of it when he 1st went to live. I think he was having a hard time figuring, figuring it out when he come back for majors. He seemed like he had a rough go of it, but he definitely seemed like he kind of got his legs underneath him here at the PGA championship. He seemed like like you said. He faded out at the end there, but a lot of people did. I don't think he was the only one, and you couldn't just point at one tour. So Jon Rahm is going to be my pick there.

186
00:23:25.860 --> 00:23:26.810
Michael Shelton: Nice pick.

187
00:23:30.330 --> 00:23:39.709
Jesse Stakes: And I kind of went back and forth. So when we're going back around for our second pick, I kind of was going back and forth with a couple of different people.

188
00:23:41.940 --> 00:23:49.351
Jesse Stakes: I'm gonna go, Brooks, Koepka and I, and I know that I know that he has not really had a great season this year.

189
00:23:49.900 --> 00:23:57.420
Jesse Stakes: but I feel like he's 1 of those competitive people that doesn't like to see his name at the bottom. He doesn't like to Miss Cuts, and I feel like he's got something to prove.

190
00:23:59.510 --> 00:24:01.390
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah. But okay.

191
00:24:01.590 --> 00:24:02.450
Wes Altice Golf: Good part.

192
00:24:02.650 --> 00:24:06.210
Jesse Stakes: I picked him in the masters for the same reason he did not do me very well.

193
00:24:08.912 --> 00:24:11.569
Jesse Stakes: Wes, who's your second pick?

194
00:24:11.900 --> 00:24:13.610
Wes Altice Golf: I am gonna go.

195
00:24:14.220 --> 00:24:16.390
Wes Altice Golf: He's playing pretty solid.

196
00:24:17.950 --> 00:24:19.909
Wes Altice Golf: I'm going to go with Sepstraca.

197
00:24:24.780 --> 00:24:25.446
Jesse Stakes: All right.

198
00:24:26.550 --> 00:24:27.500
Jesse Stakes: Shelton.

199
00:24:28.455 --> 00:24:34.834
Michael Shelton: Going back to the Scotty talk you talked about on someone who drives it far. All that I'm like, oh, you want Scotty or a robot

200
00:24:35.420 --> 00:24:40.020
Michael Shelton: who is best known as the robot of the PGA tour.

201
00:24:40.240 --> 00:24:41.640
Michael Shelton: Ludwig.

202
00:24:41.640 --> 00:24:42.780
Wes Altice Golf: Lud.

203
00:24:43.060 --> 00:24:43.630
Michael Shelton: Yup!

204
00:24:48.290 --> 00:24:50.160
Wes Altice Golf: I was dancing around him, too. Man.

205
00:24:52.030 --> 00:24:59.420
Jesse Stakes: Alright. So Padron's second pick after that was

206
00:24:59.740 --> 00:25:03.820
Jesse Stakes: Shane Lowry. So Mike Padron selects Shane Lowry.

207
00:25:06.320 --> 00:25:14.480
Jesse Stakes: and so the last pick of it is for Dr. Chris Blakely, Dr. Michael Sutton, can you please let me know what your former colleague selected here.

208
00:25:14.890 --> 00:25:16.940
Michael Shelton: Doctor Shelton is off duty

209
00:25:17.480 --> 00:25:22.740
Michael Shelton: 4 names, and they were Bryson, Dechambeau, Scottie, Scheffler, Xander, Shockley, and Shane Lowry.

210
00:25:23.110 --> 00:25:25.559
Michael Shelton: So we get to pick for him

211
00:25:26.910 --> 00:25:34.400
Wes Altice Golf: So I did write in order from favorite all the way down about 10 spots or so.

212
00:25:35.082 --> 00:25:44.350
Wes Altice Golf: But the people that are still on the board. We have, like Morricawa, Fleetwood, Neiman, Hatton, Cantlake.

213
00:25:44.750 --> 00:25:48.500
Michael Shelton: So he's had Colin Morcala, and he's had Cam Smith

214
00:25:49.032 --> 00:26:02.960
Michael Shelton: based off what I wrote down from previous. So I literally was leaning towards that kind of Fleetwood pick, I know, for drones kind of big on them and picked them previously. I I don't think that's a bad play. That would be my vote.

215
00:26:03.790 --> 00:26:05.910
Wes Altice Golf: Yeah, if we're just going down

216
00:26:06.090 --> 00:26:08.590
Wes Altice Golf: who the favorites are as of today.

217
00:26:08.590 --> 00:26:10.729
Jesse Stakes: Who won the Us. Amateur this year.

218
00:26:11.970 --> 00:26:13.689
Jesse Stakes: That's who I think you should have.

219
00:26:14.600 --> 00:26:16.610
Wes Altice Golf: I, I, I.

220
00:26:17.390 --> 00:26:22.239
Michael Shelton: I would go even better than that. I would just pick Charlie Woods a winner.

221
00:26:22.900 --> 00:26:24.880
Jesse Stakes: All right, George.

222
00:26:24.880 --> 00:26:25.630
Wes Altice Golf: Oh, my God!

223
00:26:25.630 --> 00:26:26.913
Jesse Stakes: So fleet what it is.

224
00:26:27.170 --> 00:26:27.810
Wes Altice Golf: We? Yeah.

225
00:26:27.810 --> 00:26:37.169
Wes Altice Golf: please just send that out when y'all send it out later. Pick Charlie Woods for him and see what he's he's flying to Denver. So it's gonna take a little while for him to figure it out. But I think that should go out in the official text thread.

226
00:26:37.170 --> 00:26:37.529
Jesse Stakes: Got it.

227
00:26:37.530 --> 00:26:41.579
Wes Altice Golf: His. His pick should be the 1st alternate who gets him.

228
00:26:43.128 --> 00:26:44.981
Wes Altice Golf: I like it.

229
00:26:47.106 --> 00:26:49.179
